Tony Robinson’s archaeology series Time Team is being axed by Channel 4 after almost 20 years on screen.

Ratings have slumped in recent years and an attempt to revamp the show led to accusations from its own team of ‘dumbing down’.

Since it began in 1994 it has uncovered some remarkable historical finds – including skeletons of monks beneath Westminster Abbey and gold jewellery from Anglo-Saxon times.
